Meet Your Instructor!!
Rana Kirkland - Youth Specialist
One for Health yoga and nutrition instructor, Rana Kirkland, has made having a healthy mind and body a priority. The Long Island/NY native has managed to center her life around movement and nutrition, and continued these efforts through career changes, cross-country moves, and more. Today, as a key member of One for Health’s network, Kirkland is using her background and skillset to help the nonprofit fulfill their mission.
Through the years and breadth of her experience, Kirkland is the perfect candidate to help One for Health expand on the West Coast. In addition to conducting classes in-person, Kirkland has also worked with One for Health to create a virtual yoga experience that can be used at Boys and Girls Clubs that are still easing back into hosting guests after the pandemic.
“At the end of the day, kids are kids and they can all enjoy
being active with yoga,” Kirkland says.

So let's get started -
Here are your month 3 selection of Working Sessions.
Click on any "play" button below each video to view at your convenience!
But first, some quick viewing suggestions:
Here are a few tips that will assist you in guiding your students through the Yoga videos.
- Kids should wear comfortable movement attire without shoes.
- Kids should be sitting settled with ample space to stretch before the video begins.
- Kids can be reminded that this is a calming and focused activity to take lots of deep breaths through.
- Kids can be encouraged to do the best they can, as there will be plenty of time to improve.
Your third set of videos:
The Animal Pose Videos offers a fun way to share yoga through animals. The poses (asanas) are held for a little longer than the poses (asanas) in the previous videos. They offer an ideal opportunity to stretch and strengthen muscles while viewing pictures of darling animals and listening to calming music. If it seems difficult for them to hold the poses, they can feel free to take breaks in between. These videos are designed to bring calm and focus while enjoying yoga. Savor intros of the puppy toy inspiration! :)
- FROG - Yoga Poses Video is about 7 minutes in length and shares three different poses. The poses include: Half stretch Child Poses for a deep stretch in the hips; Squat Pose for an additional deep stretch in the hips also in the lower back and Seated Sukkasana Pose for mental balance and also stretching through the hips and lower back. This is a good opportunity to remind kids to do their best.
- BIRD - Yoga Poses Video is about 5 minutes in length and shares three different poses. The poses include: Pigeon pose which requires a deep back stretch; One legged stretch, which requires a deep hamstring stretch and Half Boat with arms reaching back for an open chest stretch. It's fun to share with the kids the different types of Birds they see in the video. And as always remind them to breathe deeply.
- ELEPHANT - Yoga Poses Video is about 7 minutes in length and shares three different videos. The poses include: Shoulder Expanse Pose which has elbows pressed back for an open chest stretch; Chair pose with prayer hands for building muscles in the legs and arms and Forward Fold pose with hands clasped for a deep stretch in the legs and back. Since this one is more difficult, encourage breaks in child's pose for rest if needed.
-NUTRITION Video - "Complete Meal Snack" - This mini nutrition video is really easy to make for a complete meal of protein, fats and carbs. Please make sure that kids don't have any allergies to any of the ingredients. It's as yummy as it looks!:)
* I would recommend that by the 4th week, all of the above videos are played back to back as kids should be more capable of maintaining their calm and focus for about 20 minutes straight.
If site staff participates in all, it can be a great modeling opportunity for them to see their cool teachers stretching. :)
And if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. See you soon!!
